LURAY Caverns -- Luray, VA
When finally we were away from Chappaqua, we were a day late and a day too exhausted. We made it to Luray, VA, and checked into the Luray Caverns Motel East, receiving a combo deal that enabled us to catch the first tour in the morning (after a miserable little breakfast) at 9:00 am. We stood in line behind a born-again type Christian who asked Seymour if he liked a particular over-the-top TV evangelist. Seymour pretended that he did not recognize the name and asked if that was the fellow recently arrested for corruption in the Enron scandal. The fellow was mystified and patiently explained that it was a TV evangelist he meant. Seymour mumbled something to the effect that "He's probably good at what he does, too."
Ben took the photos in the caverns. They are very beautiful. You can get a little idea here (and you can click on the thumbnails to get a better idea).
In these two photos above, the effect is caused by a pool of water below. There are no jagged stalactites, stalagmites, or columns at the bottom, only clear, transparent, reflecting water.
The photo on the left is Pluto's Ghost, an enormous column. On the right and below are two more views of rock formations.
